Standing in Serpentine Walk within the Sanctuary Gardens, Deep Rooted is an immersive and layered exhibit, incorporating wallpaper by sponsor Morris & Co, exploring the importance of forest preservation for the world’s biodiversity and human wellbeing.

The installation for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show is inspired by our studio’s founder, Hazel’s personal and symbiotic relationship with nature As she recovered from cancer in 2007, gardening and experiencing the outdoors was a vital part of her healing process, acting as a poignant reminder that nature continues even if trauma has paused our lives.

Having previously led successful, but intense careers in TV production and vintage retail, Hazel’s life-shifting experience acted as the catalyst to her horticulture career.

“I reevaluated my life and had a new sense of fearlessness whilst in recovery from a rare cancer…Gardening was of huge solace to me during my recovery. I realised I was passionate about creating compelling visual stories whatever the medium.”

While Hazel’s professional exploration of floral design began in 2016, her love affair with flowers started as a child–describing her mother as a “instinctive and talented gardener”. Hazel’s dual Grenadian and British heritage also informs her studio’s design inspirations, educating her eye and bringing a unique viewpoint.

Deep Rooted embodies Hazel Gardiner Design’s signature studio style which is attuned to the imaginative use of colour, texture, and movement with a hint of the unexpected. We often combine dried, fresh, paper and silk materials together to bring life to commissions that seek to communicate a poignant and important message through blooms

In true likeness, this exhibit is crafted with roses, foxgloves and seasonal stems chosen for precious properties such as being edible, fragranced, or used for medicinal remedies. Beautifully architectural branches curve and trail the letters, romantically enveloping the British foliage, flowers and herbs.

The exhibit features natural Hazel, Willow and striking rhododendron branches. Many of these sculptural branches have been ethically and sustainably sourced, including vines from the low intervention Welsh vineyard run by Hazel’s sister and brother in law.
